This box set, "Dying for a Living," at just 99 cents seems to be an unbelievable bargain for Amazon Kindle readers. Indeed, for many, it is exactly that. At some 2,170 pages, it would seem to be impossible to go wrong. Still, even though I do love aspects of the ingenuity the writer displays in offering us such a tale, I just never quite got into it.Why? Well, partly, it was the plot. People who's career choice it is to die for others so that they might live is just a tad too demanding on my, admittedly, feeble, old-fashioned mind. That, however, is not what stuck most in my craw.No, what made it all the harder to swallow was the simplistic statements that most other readers will be able to dismiss, but that I just could not. Just one of those points was that people who die for others is a revenue source for government.Okay, so I had issues. What about the rest of the first story and the other six books?The writing and editing are good. Good mechanics, smooth, spell checking was acceptable, even stellar, and, to the writer's credit, unique word choices made for an enticing read.BLUSH FACTOR: For more reasons than you can guess, you will not be reading this to your prayer group or your children. Some day I going to realize that urban fantasy means Adults-Only. In other words, the description did warn me, but...well, I am always grasping good deals on Kindle and I love to read.BOTTOM LINESo long as you know what urban fantasy implies, and so long as you enjoy such novels, this is going to be a go-to book for you. And probably would have been much more acceptable even to me, save for the basic plot.Three stars out of five, for me. But, if you're open to the plot and to urban fantasies, this is five stars. This was very good and I recommend reading it. Took off one star for the terrible ending, but the writer really wrote herself into a corner and there were no good options left. I was really looking forward to seeing how she got herself out of the corner but she didn’t.Very good world building, very real characters. Some dropped threads, or parts I thought could have been a bit more fleshed out, but it kept me thinking and enjoying.The protagonist was a bit annoying and there were times I just wanted her to shut up already, especially when some of her teasing was more mean-spirited than funny. But people have flaws, and in some ways that just made her more human.
